Troy Walmart Cleared as Bomb Squad Responds to Active Investigation

TROY, Mo. — A false report claiming two people had been shot inside the Troy Walmart triggered a large law enforcement response, evacuation and extensive search of the store Monday afternoon before authorities determined the report was false and reopened the building.
The incident began at approximately 4:29 p.m. Monday, Aug. 10, when Lincoln County 911 Central Dispatch received a call from a person claiming to be at Walmart in Troy, according to information provided to Lincoln CountyWatch by Troy Police Department Interim Chief Robert Ronkoski.
A false report claiming two people had been shot prompted the evacuation and search of the Troy Walm Multiple agencies responded after Lincoln County 911 received the false shooting report at 4:29 p.m. Officers secured and searched the Walmart before the building was cleared & reopened Monday evening. People remained away while officers searched the store.
The caller claimed he had a gun and had shot two people.
The report immediately brought officers from the Troy Police Department and several other law enforcement agencies to the Walmart near Highway 47 and Magee Street.
Lincoln CountyWatch was on scene as the response unfolded. Law enforcement and emergency vehicles gathered around the property while officers worked to secure the scene and the Walmart building was evacuated.
With officers responding to a report involving an armed person and possible shooting victims, authorities began checking the building.
As the response continued, Lincoln CountyWatch contacted local law enforcement seeking information about what had prompted the evacuation and large police presence.
The Lincoln County Sheriff's Office confirmed an active investigation was underway but directed questions about the incident to the Troy Police Department because the scene was within Troy's jurisdiction.
At that point, the circumstances behind the response had not yet been publicly released by the agency handling the investigation.
Officers continued searching the Walmart while the store remained closed to the public.
At approximately 6:13 p.m., Ronkoski notified Lincoln CountyWatch that authorities had thoroughly checked the building and Walmart had reopened.
Additional information provided by Ronkoski later Monday evening established what had led to the response.
Lincoln County 911 Central Dispatch had received the 4:29 p.m. call from a person claiming to be inside Walmart with a gun and claiming to have shot two people. Troy Police and officers from several other agencies responded, evacuated the building and conducted a thorough search.
No shooting had occurred.
Ronkoski subsequently clarified to Lincoln CountyWatch that the call was a false report.
The store was cleared following the search and reopened to the public Monday evening.
While the immediate threat was determined to be false and Walmart was able to reopen, the case itself is not over. Troy Police said the false report remains an active investigation.
No additional information has been released regarding the person who made the call or whether investigators have identified a suspect in connection with the false report.
The incident resulted in an approximately two-hour emergency response at one of Troy's busiest commercial locations, beginning with the 4:29 p.m. call and continuing until authorities completed their search and cleared the building.
Lincoln CountyWatch was on scene during the response and continued contacting law enforcement as information became available throughout the evening.
The Troy Police Department is continuing the investigation into the false report.
