Winfield Man Killed Following Hours-Long Barricaded Incident, Officer-Involved Shooting

WINFIELD, Mo. — An hours-long barricaded subject incident that drew a large multi-agency response to a Winfield neighborhood Wednesday ended with a 69-year-old man dead after authorities say he pointed a firearm at members of the Missouri State Highway Patrol SWAT Team, leading to an officer-involved shooting.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol identified the man as John R. Haynes, 69, of Winfield. A member of the Patrol's SWAT Team was struck in the ballistic helmet during the exchange of gunfire but was not injured. The trooper was evaluated at the scene and released.
The incident began during the morning hours when deputies with the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a domestic disturbance involving an alleged assault at a residence on Pinewood Drive.
When deputies arrived, they encountered Haynes, who was believed to be armed. Authorities said he retreated into the residence, prompting deputies to establish a secure perimeter while additional law enforcement and emergency resources were requested.
The adult female involved in the incident was safely removed from the residence early in the response. She received medical treatment for injuries and later cooperated with investigators.
As the response expanded throughout the morning, numerous agencies arrived to assist. Lincoln CountyWatch observed personnel from the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office, Missouri State Highway Patrol, Missouri State Highway Patrol SWAT Team, Troy Police Department, Winfield Police Department, Lincoln County Ambulance District, Wright City Fire Protection District, the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office Crime Scene Unit, the Missouri State Highway Patrol Crime Scene Unit, the Lincoln County Coroner's Office and the Lincoln County Emergency Management Agency operating throughout the incident.
Lincoln CountyWatch began covering the developing incident Wednesday morning after receiving information that a significant law enforcement response was underway. Our newsroom responded to the scene throughout the day, providing updates as information was confirmed and documenting the response as additional resources arrived. Throughout the response, Lincoln CountyWatch remained in contact with responding agencies while documenting the scene and providing verified updates to the community as the situation evolved.
Among the specialized equipment observed were the Missouri State Highway Patrol's BearCat armored vehicle, SWAT personnel, crime scene investigators and aerial drone operations.
Lincoln County Emergency Management Agency Director Quentin Laws said EMA responded as part of the unified command structure for the multi-agency incident. Laws said the agency's drone team was deployed early in the response to provide aerial overwatch for officer and public safety while EMA also coordinated requests for state assistance and the Region C Drone Team response.
For several hours, officers maintained the perimeter while repeatedly attempting to establish contact with Haynes.
Throughout the day, authorities continued asking residents to avoid the Pinewood Drive area while negotiators worked to resolve the situation safely.

Shortly before the incident concluded, several nearby residents told Lincoln CountyWatch they heard multiple gunshots from the direction of the residence. Authorities later confirmed an exchange of gunfire had occurred.
The Missouri State Highway Patrol said its Troop C SWAT Team responded after being requested by the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office. During the standoff, investigators also obtained an arrest warrant for Haynes while repeated attempts were made to contact him throughout the morning and into the afternoon.
Authorities said Haynes eventually came to the front door of the residence armed with a firearm and pointed it at members of the SWAT Team.
An exchange of gunfire followed.
Haynes suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.
During the exchange, one member of the SWAT Team was struck in the ballistic helmet by gunfire. The Patrol said the trooper was evaluated at the scene and released without injuries.
Later Wednesday afternoon, the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office announced the situation was under control and there was no threat to the public. Investigators remained on scene for several hours while evidence was documented and processed.
Because the shooting involved law enforcement officers, the Missouri State Highway Patrol's Division of Drug and Crime Control is leading the investigation. Officials said additional information will be released as appropriate, and investigative reports will be forwarded to the Lincoln County Prosecuting Attorney's Office for review upon completion.
The Lincoln County Coroner's Office also confirmed it has opened an independent statutory death investigation. Coroner Dan Heavin said the investigation includes scene documentation, a postmortem examination and a review of investigative findings to determine the official cause and manner of death. The Coroner's Office said the victim's next of kin has been notified, and its findings will also be forwarded to the Missouri State Highway Patrol Division of Drug and Crime Control and the Lincoln County Prosecuting Attorney's Office when the investigation is complete.
