Winfield, Mo. — A serious crash involving a vehicle and a person riding a horse temporarily shut down Highway 47 Saturday evening, drawing emergency crews to the area near Hickory Hill Drive and prompting traffic alerts as first responders worked the scene.
According to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, the crash occurred on Highway 47 near Hickory Hill Drive and involved a vehicle and an individual riding a horse. Emergency services responded and conducted an on-scene investigation.
The Sheriff’s Office confirmed that no life-threatening injuries were reported, and everyone involved in the crash is expected to be okay. Tragically, the horse did not survive the collision.

During the response, traffic on Highway 47 was reduced and motorists were advised to avoid the area while emergency crews worked. Fire and EMS units later cleared the scene, and the roadway has since fully reopened to traffic.
The Sheriff’s Office acknowledged that the incident generated concern and online rumors, and thanked the public for their patience as responders focused on safety.
In a statement, the Sheriff’s Office emphasized Lincoln County’s strong agricultural heritage and its large horse population, noting that incidents like this are especially difficult for the community. Drivers were encouraged to remain alert in rural areas where livestock and horses may be present.
“Our thoughts are with everyone involved,” the Sheriff’s Office said.
