TROY, Mo. — What started as a welfare check for a driver passed out behind the wheel Sunday evening quickly turned into a felony drug arrest after Troy police say they discovered dozens of suspected fentanyl capsules inside the vehicle.

Officers with the Troy Police Department responded Sunday evening to a report of a man slumped over the steering wheel of a vehicle in a drive-through in Troy.

When officers arrived, they located a man later identified as Dennis G. Williamson Jr., of Troy, sitting in the driver’s seat of a black Chevrolet Equinox.

Charges

• Trafficking Drugs – 2nd Degree (Felony C)

• Resisting / Interfering With Arrest for a Felony (Felony E)

Williamson is currently being held without bond pending trial. A judge ordered the defendant detained, determining that release conditions would not reasonably ensure the safety of the community.

Officers initially attempted to wake the driver by shouting commands through the vehicle window, but he did not respond.

Police reported that several attempts to wake Williamson — including performing a sternum rub to his chest — were unsuccessful.

Concerned about the driver’s condition, officers confirmed the vehicle was in park and opened the driver’s door to check on him.

When the door was opened, an officer reported seeing a clear bag containing multiple capsules filled with a white substance inside the driver-side door area. Based on training and experience, the officer suspected the capsules contained fentanyl.

As officers began attempting to remove Williamson from the vehicle, he reportedly regained consciousness and began resisting commands.

Police say Williamson refused repeated orders to exit the vehicle and stomped on the gas pedal, causing the engine to rev loudly while officers continued attempting to gain control of the situation.

Officers ultimately removed Williamson from the vehicle and attempted to place him into custody. According to police, he continued resisting while officers attempted to secure his arms and place him in handcuffs.

Additional officers arrived and assisted in taking Williamson into custody.

Investigators later seized the suspected narcotics from the vehicle. Police say the suspected drugs consisted of approximately 55 capsules weighing about 5.69 grams believed to contain fentanyl.

Officers noted the suspected narcotics were not field-tested due to the extreme danger associated with fentanyl exposure.

Williamson is scheduled to make his initial court appearance Tuesday in Lincoln County Associate Circuit Court in Troy.

Williamson is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
